In a heart-wrenching incident that underscores the urgency of addressing mental health, Adaeze Doris Jaja, a 31-year-old 400-level female student of Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ago Iwoye, Ogun State, has tragically taken her own life.

The incident occurred within the premises of a hotel in the town, raising concerns and shedding light on the pressing need for mental health awareness.

Adaeze was discovered lying unconscious and foaming at the mouth in a freezer, with an empty bottle of Sniper 1000EC/DDVP found beside her. The devastating news was confirmed by SP Omolola Odutola, the spokeswoman of the Ogun State Police Command, who reported that the hotel's Director, Hon. Oduniyi Adelaja, informed the police about the incident on January 27 at approximately 7:30 a.m.

Upon receiving the distressing information, the police swiftly took action, and Adaeze was rushed to Best Care Hospital before being transferred to Love and Care Hospital in Ago Iwoye. Tragically, she was confirmed dead at the latter medical facility.

SP Odutola revealed that the scene of the incident was investigated, and an empty Sniper bottle was recovered. The body of the deceased has been moved to the Olabisi Onabanjo University mortuary for an autopsy, providing a crucial step in understanding the circumstances surrounding her untimely death.

Emphasizing the severity of the situation, the Divisional Crime Branch (DCB) has initiated an investigation into the case. Simultaneously, the university authorities have been informed, prompting a collaborative effort to unravel the events leading up to this tragic loss.

As this sorrowful incident unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of mental health support systems and the need for open conversations about mental well-being within educational institutions and society at large. It is a call to action to promote empathy, understanding, and resources for those grappling with mental health challenges, urging everyone to say no to suicide and foster an environment where individuals feel seen, heard, and supported.
